Getting Sober, Weirdly!

My chat with Rafael Frumkin about being weird and sober!

I loved doing this Live with my pal, Rafael Frumkin. If you haven’t subscribed to her Substack, you should. She is a journalist, author, writing coach, professor, and extremely cool person in recovery (more on that here).

She has published two novels – The Comedown (Henry Holt, 2018), Confidence (Simon and Schuster, 2023) – and a short story collection, Bugsy (Simon and Schuster, 2024). Confidence was named a New York Times Editor’s Pick and one of the Washington Post’s 50 Notable Works of Fiction. The Comedown was acquired for TV development by Freddie Highmore and Regina King, and then by SONY Trident.

I was flattered when Raf asked me to chat with her about recovery, and I couldn’t have picked a better title than “Getting Sober Weirdly!” We chat about the history of AA, writing about recovery, party girls, and Bill Wilson taking LSD (you can find my story about that here). As you’ll see, she had some connectivity issues but was a trooper, and hopefully the worst of it is just an occasionally pixelated Raf. If you tuned in, thank you; if not, now’s your chance (or your chance is whenever you want; this is an email).

Talk to you all on Thursday!
